Mrs. Mary Gladys Cox Conkin, Holyoke Apartments, formerly of Sullivan Gardens, was born Friday, July 13, 1917, and died Sunday, February 3, 2008.
Mrs. Conkin was a home-maker and had spent most of her life in Sullivan County.
She loved raising flowers and had a very green thumb.
She was a 66-year member of Walkers Fork Baptist Church, having joined in 1942.
Mrs. Conkin was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, Walter Buster Conkin; a son, James Lewis Conkin; her parents, Clarence Lee Cox and Sarah Elizabeth Hickman Cox; and four brothers, R. C. Cox, Orville L. Cox, whom she lost during World War II, James C. Cox, and H. Earl Cox.
Mrs. Conkin is survived by three sons, Dennis Lynn Conkin, and wife Janet, Walter Kenneth Conkin, and wife Brenda, and Larry Wayne Conkin, and wife Mitos, all of Kingsport; six grandchildren, Elizabeth Conkin Britt, and husband Steve, Brian Kenneth Conkin, and Isaac Vincent Conkin, all of Kings-port; Matthew Jonathan Conkin, and wife Lynsey, and their son Jackson Matthew, of Athens, AL, Mark Andrew Conkin, and wife Mary Michael, and their daughter Bailey Kay, of Knoxville, Jamieson Paul Conkin, and wife Stacy, of Asheville, NC; three brothers, J. Paul Cox, and wife Mildred, Robert L. Cox, and Roy D. Cox, and wife Bonnie; two sisters, Hazel Cox Crawford, and Ruth Cox Cline, and husband David; sister-in-law Lillian Cavin Cox; and several cousins, nephews and nieces.
The family will receive visitors from 5 until 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Hamlett Dobson Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport. Services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home, with Pastors John Crawford and Jeff Strong officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at East Lawn Memorial Park Memorial Park, with Pastor John Crawford officiating. Family and friends attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 9:45 a.m.
Pallbearers will be the grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be Dana Conkin, Harvey Conkin, David Cox, Johnny Cox, Ronnie Cox, Clarence Crawford, and Leonard Melear.
