Mary Will Vaughan Hatfield, 88, of Kingsport formerly of 4523 Mitchell Road passed away peacefully Wednesday morning April 8, 2009 at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Beverly Hatfield.
Mary was born in 1920 in Opelika, Alabama. She grew up in Tampa, Florida. She graduated from Auburn University and became an intern in a Dayton, Ohio hospital where she became a Certified Hospital Dietician. During World War II, she worked in a laboratory at Oak Ridge, TN where she married John R. Hatfield, whom she had met previously while attending Auburn University. While living in Oak Ridge, their first son, Bob, was born. After the war, they moved to Kingsport where they raised their other three sons, Allen, Jerry, and Kenneth. After John s death in 1972, Mary enjoyed traveling to many countries with groups from her church and her friends. She had worked at Park Belk for many years before her retirement.
Mary enjoyed being a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority while attending Auburn University and continued to be active as an alumnus. She was also a member of the DAR. She belonged to a bridge club for many years. She was very talented in many types of needlework and in sewing and enjoyed cooking for family and friends. She liked gardening and belonged to a Garden Club. She attended aerobics sessions several times a week. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels for many years.
Mary was a long standing member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church and the Crusade Sunday School Class and was very active in many church activities.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar A. and Jessie Mae Vaughan, her husband, John, his parents, John R. and Emily Corra Hatfield, brother, Marvin Hatfield, and brother-in-laws, William Reaves and Robert Rocha, and a niece, Amy Rocha.
Mary is survived by her four sons and daughter-in-laws, William Robert Cathy, Appleton, WI; John Allen Nancy, Westfield, NJ; Jerry Vaughan Beverly, Kingsport; and Kenneth Lee Helen Ann, Allentown, PA. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Edgar A. Vaughan, Jr. Jackie, Marietta, GA. On the Hatfield side, she is survived by Ruby Reaves, Laura Rocha, and Collier Hatfield. She is further survived by 10 grandchildren: Natalle and Jeff Hatfield, David, Richard, and Andrew Hatfield, Jade Hatfield, Elizabeth and Kevin Hatfield, Julie and Michael Mullins and 2 great grandsons, Lawrence Hatfield and Beau Lamm. She is also survived by several cousins, 3 nieces, 3 nephews, and several great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Friday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.
Funeral services will be at 12 pm Saturday at First Broad Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Jack P. Weikel officiating. Burial will follow in East Lawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be sons and grandsons.
