Mary Helen Johnson Davis

Mary Davis, 85, of Kingsport passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 28, 2016 at Church Hill Health Care following a lengthy illness.

She was born in Scott County, Virginia and lived in various cities in the Southeast. She was a homemaker and participated in many volunteer organizations such as nursing homes, hospitals, and mental health centers in the towns where she relocated following her husband in his managerial responsibilities with J.C. Penney Company. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kingsport.

She attended public schools in Gate City and was captain of the Shoemaker High School Girls Basketball team during the senior year of her four years of competition. She also served on the Council of Student Government.

Mary attended Milligan College and Lees-McRae where she was a member of the Sullivan Sorority and a member of the May Court.

She was preceded in death by her husband and best friend of 48 years, Clifford C. Davis. Also preceding her in death was her father Arthur L. Johnson and her mother, Eliza Lawson Johnson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers Curtis and his wife, Rella Smith Johnson; Clyde B. and his wife Sylva McDavid Johnson; John F.; Ross P.; Arthur L. Jr.; and sisters Eureta Johnson Baldwin and her husband Morris J. Baldwin; Edna Johnson Pratt and her husband Frank T. Pratt; Phyllis Johnson McConnell, and sister-in-law (Mrs. H. T.) Meredith Isley Johnson.

Surviving is her brother Hiram Thomas (H.T.) Johnson of Church Hill. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Zula L. Johnson, Trula S. Johnson and Evelyn M. Johnson; brother-in-law, Doyle McConnell and several special nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, March 5, 2016 in Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. The Rev. Mitchell Whisnant will officiate. Those attending committal services are asked to assemble at the graveside by 12:45pm Saturday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Youth Department of the First Baptist Church, 200 Church Circle, Kingsport, TN 37660.
