Kingsport Mary H. McConnell, age 91, celebrated life from October 9, 1921 through March 19, 2013. Born in Universal, Indiana, she was a graduate of the University of Kentucky. She was the first PTA president of Andrew Johnson Elementary School; served at the Kingsport Palsy center; and was the vice-president of the Home and School Safety Committee on the Kingsport Safety Council. She was a Girl Scout Leader and was on the Girl Scout Area Council. She served as secretary at Andrew Jackson Elementary School. Mary's greatest gift of community service was being the initiator, organizer, and first teaching leader in Kingsport of the internationally known Bible Study Fellowship. Most of all, she will be remembered as a loving wife/mother/grandmother/great-grandmother.
Mary was a member of First Baptist Church of Kingsport. She served there as a Sunday school teacher and as a member of the choir.
Surviving are Mary's husband, Wayne V. McConnell and daughters, Carol Freas, Joyce Underwood and their families, including six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A private family graveside service will be conducted at Oak Hill Memorial Park on Friday. This will be followed by the memorial service conducted by Dr. Marvin Cameron at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church. The visitation will be held immediately following the service at the church.
