KINGSPORT Mary Lou Strickler, passed away peacefully Sunday morning Nov. 15, 2009 at her home following an extended illness.
She was born Sept. 21, 1930 in Newport, Tenn., moving to Kingsport in 1935. Mary Lou had an active career in the insurance industry and served as the president and treasurer of the Kingsport Association of Insurance Women. She was a member of Kendricks Creek United Methodist Church. She actively participated in many programs of the church including the United Methodist Women UMW, the Women Willing Workers 3W's, Joy Club, Choir and the Gospel Warriors Sunday School. She held numerous leadership positions in the church and was very active in missions and benevolence work. The UMW recently honored her by naming their organization "The Mary Lou Circle". She had a long-time vision and was very instrumental in the construction of the Education and Ministry Center at Kendricks Creek UMC that would be physically accessible and welcoming to all.
Her parents, Charles "Gus" and Louise Allison; and husband, Bill Strickler preceded her in death.
Surviving are five sons, Ross and wife, Brenda, Gray, Steve and wife, Paula, David and wife, Margaret, Tim and wife, Jackie and Dan and wife, Tracy, all of Kingsport. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; special first cousin, Linda Linkroum of Kingsport; and special caregiver Shelby English, Fall Branch.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home in Kingsport.
Services will follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. John Hackney and Rev. Susan Anderson officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens.
Her five grandson's and grandson in-law will serve as pallbearers.
Her two granddaughters and great-grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kendricks Creek United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 5784, Kingsport, Tenn. 37663.
