Maryann Huddleston Heppert Hasek, 82, died Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at Asbury Place.
She was born in Asheville, North Carolina, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in chemistry and was employed at Oak Ridge, where she met her husband, E. David Heppert. They followed engineering projects in Chicago, Cleveland and Ann Arbor, and settled in Kingsport in 1960 when Dave joined the engineering staff of Tennessee Eastman.
Maryann was active in Girl Scouts, Holston Valley Hospital's Lifeline program, and Contact-Concern. She taught in the Bible-in-the-Schools program as well as participated and led women's bible studies and prayer groups both at her church and in the Christian Women's Club. She had a lifelong love for tennis, swimming, and walking.
Following the death of her first husband, she married Robert Hasek, a retired Eastman chemist in 1978. After joining First Broad Street Methodist Church, she and Bob sang in the choir. Bob and Maryann enjoyed travel, including bicycle trips in Europe, escorting friends on walking tours in Switzerland and traveling in Asia and the Orient. They also enjoyed visiting their children and grandchildren as they grew up and moved around the country.
Maryann shared her faith and strength with her family and friends and wrapped each of them with love.
In addition to her first husband, Dave, she was preceded in death by her brother, Sam Huddleston III.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Hasek; daughters, Mary Donnan Heppert of Augusta, Georgia, Becky Clausen of St. Louis, Missouri, Carol Atkins and husband, John of Rural Hall, North Carolina; son, Richard Heppert and wife, Doreen of Kingsport; stepson, Reed Hasek of Knoxville, Tennessee; grandsons, Bart Domino and wife, Jessica, and Matt Clausen; step-granddaughter, Anna Clausen; step-grandsons, Jesse Hasek and wife, Heather, and Noah Hasek; and step-great-granddaughter, Riley Hasek.
The family thanks Preston Place II, the medical personnel of Baysmont and Dr. Lesley Jones for their loving care of Maryann.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at First Broad Street United Methodist Church, and following the memorial service.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Broad Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Jack P. Weikel officiating.
