James H. “Jim” Carter, Master Sergeant Retired, 85, of Mount Carmel, went to be with the Lord Saturday, August 3, 2019 while surrounded by his family. Born in the Mabe Community of Scott County, he had lived in this area most of his life. He proudly served his country in the Air Force for 21 years, where he attained the rank of Master Sergeant. He retired from the U.S. Post Office after 20 plus years of service. Jim was an active volunteer in the W. Carters Valley Ruritan. He was also a faithful member of State Line Baptist Church where he served as deacon until his health prevented him. Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ewell and Martha Carter, and brothers, Ralph and Ray Carter.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Marie Carter; sons, Jimmy Carter and wife, Becky, David Carter and wife, Debby, and Doug Carter; daughter, Missy Barnette and husband, Doug; grandchildren, Brittany Stoops, Brandon Carter, Stephanie Carter, Amellia Carter, Alec Carter, Sarah Carter and Zachary Barnette; great-grandchildren, Hunter Shepherd and Rhiannon Crawford; sister, Marlene Kindle and husband, Frank; brother, Danny Carter and wife, Helen; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 pm on Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at State Line Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm with Brother Wayne Morelock and Brother Curt Williams officiating.
The graveside service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 am at Church Hill Memory Gardens. Military Rites will be conducted by American Legion Posts 3/265. Sons and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
