Michael D. Cordell, 60, of Church Hill, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2008 due to an aneurysm.
Born in Banner Elk, NC, Mike had been a resident of Church Hill for over 55 years and was a graduate of Church Hill High School. Mike joined the U. S. Naval Reserve and while serving, he was called to serve active duty during the Vietnam Era. He retired from Kroger after 36 years of service. Mike was an avid hunter, fisherman, and also enjoyed his garden.
He was a charter member of New Fellowship Ministries in Church Hill.
Mike was a recipient of a liver transplant in 2005 and considered it to be a second chance, calling each day a bonus day. In return it was Mike's wish to give of himself to others that second chance through organ donation.
His parents, Clifton and Ruth Cordell; and a brother, Richard Cordell preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Patsy Walters Cordell of the home; daughter, Amy Nelson and husband Rick of Kingsport; son, Jonathan Cordell and wife Allison of Kingsport; four grandchildren, Alex Crawford, Logan, Morgan, and Weston Cordell; sister, Kathy Fee of Knoxville; brother, Clifton Allison Cordell and wife MiChi of Hinesville, GA; nephew, Tim Cordell; and two nieces, Allison and Sarah Pierce.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at New Fellowship Ministries, 164 Old Stage Road, Church Hill. Directions to the church: from Kingsport, 11W toward Church Hill, at the red light Food City will be on the left and Kenjo Market will be on the right, turn right on Silver Lake Road, cross Main Street and the railroad tracks. Church is on the left, corner of Silver Lake Road and Old Stage Road.
Services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the church with Dr. Rocky Churchwell officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Church Hill Memory Gardens with military rites by the Charles DeWitt Byrd Post #3382 of the VFW.
Pallbearers will be Steve Walters, Mike Walters, Rick Ashworth, Josh Gagne, Chad Bacon, Rick Johnson, Chris Nelson, and Jeff Pierce.
Honorary pallbearers will all of his friends from New Fellowship Ministries.
