Mildred Douglas Armstrong, 81, of Brookhaven Manor and Maple Oak Apartments, went to be with the Lord on Saturday evening January 30, 2010 at Holston Valley Medical Center.
Born in Waycross, VA, her family moved to Tennessee when she was a toddler. She lived in the Pine Grove Community for some years, but spent most of her life in Sullivan Gardens and Kingsport. She went to Sullivan High School, completed the LPN nursing course at HVCH, and attended ETSU Kingsport. She was a nurse in OB/GYN at HVCH until a disability forced her retirement. She later was an instructor and office manager for H&R Block Tax Service. She also had been a substitute teacher in Greene County, TN.
Mrs. Armstrong attended Maple-Oak Gospel Ministries and was a charter member of Higher Ground Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school and Training Union at West View Baptist Church in the early fifties and taught Sunday school at Bethany FWB Church in Greene County.
She also was active with the Cub Scouts and PTA in her earlier years and was a former member of the Baileyton Chapter of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Thomas J and Inez Mitchell Douglas; three brothers: Clayton J Douglas & Haskel M Douglas, Kingsport, Dr. Ernest E Douglas, Knoxville; and her sister, Kathleen Kennedy, Cincinnati, OH.
Mrs. Armstrong is survived by a daughter, Sandra Bledsoe and husband Ronnie; a son, Roger Armstrong; a granddaughter Tonya Armstrong Kincer; two great-grandsons Kaeden and Kaleb Kincer, all of Kingsport; three sisters, Gladys Collins of Cleveland, OH, Geneva Bullis, Edith Carroll and husband Bobby; two brothers, Donald Douglas, Edward Douglas and wife Lillie all of Kingsport; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Opal Clayton Douglas of Kingsport and Mrs. Geraldine Dr. Ernest E. Douglas of Knoxville.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Tuesday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow at 7 pm with Dr. Phil Hoskins officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted 2 pm Wednesday in Tri-Cities Memory Gardens.
The family would like to send a special thank you to the staff of Brookhaven Manor for the professional love and care shown to Mrs. Armstrong during her stay, and to all her friends at Maple Oak Apartments.
