Mildred Katherine Greenway Miller

Mildred Katherine Greenway Miller passed from this life on Wednesday, December 18, 2013. Our Mama, born in Ducktown, Tennessee in the Copper Basin to Harmon and Katherine Greenway, was the fourth of five children. She remained proud of her hometown and devoted to her family throughout her life.

Mildred attended Millsaps College, Tusculum College and the University of Tennessee, graduating in 1945 from the University with a degree in home economics. Her first job after college was as dietician with TEC in the food services section. She would return to work some 30 years later with TEC as manager of the executive lunchroom, a job in which she delighted.

During her time at Tusculum College, she met the love of her life, Pat Miller. After his service in the Marines in WWII, they married and enjoyed 68 years together. Theirs was a true love story of devotion to one another.

Mildred was active in her church, First Broad Street United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities throughout the years. She was a dedicated member of Greer Memorial Sunday School Class and a member of the sanctuary choir for over 50 years. She also volunteered in various other organizations, cooking for Meals on Wheels for over 20 years.

She enjoyed entertaining, golfing, traveling and being with family. But her passion in life was feeding those she loved. A consummate cook and an eager learner, she never tired of trying recipes and handing out her creations. She always set a beautiful table and made friends and family feel like royalty.

Mildred collected friends, and her collection was a grand one! She was a caring friend and an energetic woman. Most of all, she was full of fun and encouraged everyone to see the sunny side of life.

She is survived by her husband, Patrick Miller; three children, Pat Miller and wife, Ann Rice; Jan Boyd and husband, Wally Boyd; and Michael Miller. Her grandchildren are Jennifer Horvath, Emily Mercer, Laura Ann Singh, McClure Boyd and Chris Miller. Six particularly beautiful and wonderful great-grandchildren also remain. Several nieces and nephews and their families remember her with great fondness: Harmon Greenway, Meg Windsor, Sallie Ledbetter, Letty Carr, Joel Holt, Keith Holt, Joe Selby, John Selby, and David Selby, as well as two dear sisters-in-law, Vivian Selby and Jean Greenway.

The family would like to give a special thanks to caregivers, Debbie Pickwell, Marsha Starnes and Karen Blevins, and to Brenda Harper and the staff at Asbury Healthcare System for their care and compassion.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 29, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at First Broad Street United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service.

Memorial contributions can be made to First Broad Street United Methodist Church, 100 E. Church Circle, Kingsport, TN 37660 or to Meals on Wheels, 301 Louis Street, Kingsport, TN 37660.
