Mildred Schulken Smith departed this life and went to her Maker on January 15, 2010, following her treatment at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Mildred was born in 1923 in Roanoke, VA. She attended early schooling in Charlotte and Durham, NC. Mildred attended Duke University where she graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science. Later she attended Kent State University and East Tennessee State University, where she earned degrees in Library Science. She was Library Director of Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport until she retired in 1983. In 1974, Mildred and Dr. Benjamin Smith were married and made their home in Kingsport.

Mildred was pleased to be a member of the local Women's Virginia Club where she found kinship and enjoyed the monthly meetings. She continued her interest in literature through membership in the Contemporary Book Club. She kept in touch through her retirement years with Kingsport City School teachers through the Kingsport Retired Teachers Association. Health problems in later years restricted some of her activities, but she continued community and Methodist Church activities.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roger and Amelia Schulken, and her brother, Roger Moore Schulken, Jr.

Mildred is survived by her husband, Dr. Benjamin H. Smith; daughters, Laurie and husband, Richard Williamson, and Barbara and husband, Dr. Robert Rohde; son, Gregory and wife, Nancy Earnheart; step-children, Charles Smith and Ellen Serrano; grandchildren, Charles, James, and Susannah. The family wishes to express special appreciation to caregivers Kay Dockery, Ryanne Dockery, and Michelle Morelock.

The family will receive friends at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, 117 E. Charlemont Avenue, Kingsport, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 20, 2010. Services will be conducted on Thursday morning, January 21, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of First Broad Street United Methodist Church with Rev Jack P. Weikel officiating.

Burial will follow in Oak Hill Memorial Park.
