Nell Whetsel

Nell Whetsel, 89, passed away on Friday, September 2, 2016. She was born and educated in Scott County, VA. At 16, she began working at a drug store. Nell was employed at Eastman as a floor lady, where she met her husband, Ralph. She owned a beauty shop for several years. Nell and Ralph had a farm and loved gardening, canning, and having family over.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Whetsel; son, Thomas J. Whetsel; mother, Ona Hicks, father, Leroy Hicks; brothers, Roy and Joseph Hicks; and sisters, Allie Hutchins and Faye Addington.

Nell is survived her sister, Louise McDevitt; brothers, Emory Hicks, Rex Hicks, and Ezra Hicks; grandchildren, Tara Wigfall and husband, Ashley Whetsel, Katie Lawson and husband, and Sam Whetsel; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The funeral will follow at 7 p.m. with Rev. Tommy Griffin officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at East Lawn Memorial Park. Those planning to attend the graveside may meet at 10:45 a.m. at East Lawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
