Nelson R. Barger

Nelson R. Barger, 82, of Indian Springs, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 22, 2015, at his home.

A native of Indian Springs, he was the son of the late Richard Barger and Ruth Barger Harr. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Nelson worked in the accounting department of Holston Defense and retired after 28 years of service. He dearly loved music and sang in many church choirs over the years. He was a member of Indian Springs Baptist Church.
He loved his Lord and his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

In addition to his parents, Nelson was preceded in death by an infant brother, Paul Barger, and brother, Ed Barger; and his step-father, Haskell Harr.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Valery S. Barger; two daughters, Karen Lovelace and husband, David of Kingsport, and Sherri Athanasia and husband, Dean of Wellesley, MA; six grandchildren, Ryan Lovelace and wife, Jen, Meghan Hall and husband, Adrian, Olivia Lovelace, Gabrielle Athanasia, Sam Athanasia, and Christopher Athanasia; one great-granddaughter, Ella; one expected great-grandson, Elijah; two sisters, Phyllis B. Horton and Rita Stone and husband, Charles; one brother, Carl Barger and wife, Nancy; one sister-in-law, Eula Pendleton and husband, Olin; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday at Indian Springs Baptist Church. The service will follow at 4:00 p.m. with Dr. Dave Phillips officiating.

The graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at East Lawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Ron Horton, Richard Horton, Ron Banton, Bobby Taylor, David Lovelace, Dean Athanasia, Adrian Hall, and Ryan Lovelace. Honorary pallbearers will be Christopher Athanasia and Sam Athanasia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Indian Springs Baptist Church, 325 Hill Road, Kingsport, TN 37664, or Roller Cemetery, c/o Jewel Pendergrass, 5660 Hwy 126, Blountville, TN 37617.

The family would like to extend special thanks to 3rd Floor Oncology Wilcox Hall, Wellmont Hospice, and Comfort Keepers.
