O. Gary Conkin, 57, Kingsport, died unexpectedly Thursday, February 24, 2011 at his home.
A graduate of Sullivan High School, Gary served for 17 years as a detective for the Sullivan County Sheriff's Department. In recent years, he had served as constable in the 8th district of Sullivan County. Gary served in the Tennessee National Guard. He was owner/operator of Eagle Construction Company before his retirement. Gary attended First Apostolic Gospel Church.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Wayne and Ollie Goad and Noah and Martha Conkin; and the mother of his son, Bea Fitch Conkin.
Survivors are son, Christopher Grant Conkin of Kingsport; parents, Onnie and Bertha Mae Conkin, Kingsport; uncle, Buddy Wayne Goad and wife, Elmira of Fall Branch; his special friend, Gwen Moore, Kingsport and several cousins.
Calling hours are from 6-8 pm Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Services will begin at 8 p.m. with Pastor Gregg Street and Pastor Tommy Benton officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 am Thursday at Mowell Cemetery on Lone Star Road.
Pallbearers will be Grant Conkin, Jonathan Proffit, Jimmy Issacs, Stewart Vaughn, Charles Williams, and Wayne Goad.
