Opal W. Salyer, 94, of Kingsport, went home to be with the Lord surrounded by her family on May 18, 2009 at her home. She was retired from Montgomery Ward in 1982 after more than 30 years of service. She was a devoted member of Pleasant View Baptist Church, having attended the church since 1947 and serving as a Sunday School teacher. Mrs. Salyer's life's work was devoted to serving the Lord and her community.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Salyer d. 1973; an infant son, Joseph Salyer; a son, Clarence Salyer d. 1999; a daughter, Betty Wilder d. 2006; six brothers; and five sisters.
Mrs. Salyer is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Duncan and husband Jim of Kingsport; six granddaughters, Teresa Light and husband David of Kingsport; Susan Cooper of Kingsport, Rebecca Fannon of Kingsport, Cindy Osborne and husband Mark of Kingsport, Kim Salyer, and Lisa and husband Greg of NY; three grandsons, Randy Duncan of Kingsport, Andy Duncan and wife Raeann of Kingsport, and Jeff Wilder and wife Peggy of Kingsport; eighteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lillian Ratliff of Bristol, VA; and a very special friend, Jodi Dunford.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Pleasant View Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 8:00 p.m. with Pastor Wayne Baker officiating.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at East Lawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be deacons from Pleasant View Baptist Church.
