Pansy Gillenwater Johnson, age 82, of Kingsport, passed away Friday, January 16, 2009, at Wexford House. The daughter of Logan and Nancy Gillenwater, she grew up in Scott County, VA, and graduated from Dungannon High School. She left the next day for Washington, D.C., where she worked for Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. until her marriage to S. O. Johnson, Jr. They lived in St. Paul, VA, and later moved with their son, David, to Kingsport.
Pansy was an active member of Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church, where she was involved with the "Trashy Ladies" fundraising group, Habitat Newsletter, and the cookbook committee. She also served as secretary/treasurer of the Sunday School in past years. She worked in the office at Anderson Ford for many years, retiring in 1988.
She was preceded in death by her husband, S. O. Johnson, Jr., brothers Ross Gillenwater, Lee Gillenwater, and Kyle Gillenwater; and a sister Charlie Mae Osborne.
She is survived by a son, David Johnson and wife Nancy, of Kingsport, and grandchildren Jennifer and Logan Johnson; sister Gladys Stapleton, Chesapeake, VA, Patsy Sawyer, Clintwood, VA, and Barbara Collins, Kingsport; brothers Bill Gillenwater, Coeburn, VA, and Jack Gillenwater, Kingsport; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. Services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with Rev. J. Thomas Phillips officiating. Graveside services will follow at Holston View Cemetery in Weber City, VA.
