Paul Lucas passed on to the Lord's hands peacefully in the early morning hours of Thursday March 1st. Born on September 1st of 1928 at his parent's home in the small community of Van Hill, Tennessee, he was delivered by a Doctor his father brought in on horseback. He grew up and lived his entire adult life in Kingsport with his parents Oren Carl (O.C.) and Bernice Jones Lucas and his brother Carl Lucas who preceded him in death. In 1949, he was married to his high school sweetheart Loree Elisabeth Lucas whom he loved passionately for 64 years until her death in August of 2013.
Paul Lucas was a pioneer in the Colonial Heights community since 1958 and spearheaded the construction of the first baseball diamond in the community where he coached young boys for more than a decade. As a young man he had been a celebrated athlete for the then Sullivan High School, but he continued his exploits on the softball diamond and the local bowling leagues - even rolling a PERFECT game at age 70. And up until recently, he was a daily fixture at Warriors Path State Park walking the trails, feeding the ducks and playing with children.
Paul is survived by their eldest son, Tommy Paul and daughter-in-law, Gwen Lucas of Knoxville, their youngest son, Scott Lucas of Nashville, as well as his two grandsons, Jonathan Paul Lucas of Nashville, and Austin Scott Lucas and his wife, Lindsay of Boulder, Colorado. Paul is also survived by several nieces and nephews including Craig, Chris of Maryland, Shelly Lucas of Florida, Mark and Jeff Steadman of Kingsport, Jennifer Harris of Brentwood and Suzanne Jackson of Collierville, Angela Davidson Chastain of Hickory, NC, and Lisa Davidson Hencherick of Charlotte.
Services will be at the Colonial Heights United Methodist Church beginning at 4 p.m. on Sunday afternoon March 4th with Rev. Robert Burlingham officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
The entombment service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, March 5th at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Hubble, Jay Taylor, Owen Way, Gerald Gilbert, Jim Hall and Randall Chase.
