Pearl Gulley Smith, 87, Kingsport, died Thursday, January 10, 2008, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

She was born September 17, 1920, in Hawkins County, Tennessee, but her childhood years were spent in Scott County, Virginia. At age 13 Pearl moved with her parents to Kingsport which was home until her death.

Pearl was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School and East Tennessee State University.

In 1945 she married Ray Gulley who preceded her in death in 1973. She taught at Lincoln Elementary School for 30 year until her retirement. After retirement she became a faithful volunteer at Wilcox Hall Nursing Home and Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was also a warm and caring volunteer for the Ladies Auxiliary at Holston Valley Medical Center. Pearl was a longtime member of First Baptist Church until her marriage in 1987 to Holiday Smith. She then joined Holiday as an active member of Mafair United Methodist Church.

Together they were active in the Kingsport Civitan Evening Club in which she was honored with the Charlie Keener Good Citizenship Award. She was a member of the Kingsport Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Sorority, Order of the Eastern Star, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She and Holiday served as Co-Grand Marshalls of the 2000 Fourth of July Parade.

She is survived by her daughter, Wanda McLellan and husband, Judge John McLellan of Kingsport; grandsons, John R. McLellan and wife Michelle of Elizabethton, Jason R. McLellan and wife Amy of Kingsport; great-grandchildren, Brittany, Kaile Pearl, Jessie, Sammy, Sydnee, and Sheridan; stepdaughter, Betsy Valentini, Hickory, NC; step-grandchildren, Gina Hefner and husband Kelly, C. Dean Valentini and wife Aninda, and Holli Wilson and husband, Derrick; and step-great-grandchildren, Marly and Kage.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the caring staff at Asbury at Steadman Hill and staff at W-3 Holston Valley.

There will be a family graveside service Sunday at Holston View Cemetery.

Pearl's life will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Mafair United Methodist Church with Rev. Ralph M. Kidd officiating. A reception will follow at the church.

Pallbearers will be Judge John S. McLellan, John R. McLellan, Jason R. McLellan, C. Dean Valentini, Kelly Hefner, and Derrick Wilson. Honorary pallbearers will be the great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer Center of Upper East Tennessee, 2000 Greenway Street, Kingsport, TN 37660.
