Peggy O. Martin, 73, of Jonesborough, TN, Passed away Saturday, April 23, 2011 at Holston Valley Hospital after suffering from complications that arose after surgery.
Peggy grew up in Fall Branch, TN, and graduated from Fall Branch High School in 1955. After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Reading from Carson-Newman College in 1959, she went on to earn a Master's in Education from East Tennessee State University. Relocating to Virginia, she worked in Newport News, VA and later in Poquoson, VA as a Reading and Language Arts instructor, her successful career spanned 44 years in the classroom before her retirement in 2003. Therefore, she was loved and respected by many generations of former students and peers.
After that time, she returned home to East Tennessee with her beloved toy poodle Casey, content to spend her days with family and close friends as she pursued her interests in reading and travel. She was also an active member of the fellowship at Fall Branch Baptist Church and supporter of animal rights and protection.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Buster and Shirley Overbey.
Peggy is survived by her daughter Kimberly Martin Young and her husband Richard Young of Huntsville, AL; daughter Shirley Katz of Medford, OR; former husband Emerson E. Martin Jr. of Carrollton, VA; sister Martha Martin and her husband, Earl Martin of Gray, TN; beloved cousin and best friend, Janice Cox of Fall Branch, TN; nephew David Earl Martin and wife, Lois Martin of Jonesborough; niece, Leslie Martin Boucher and husband Fred of Fort Wayne, IN; her uncle, David Overbey and his wife Edith, Kingsport, TN; grandchildren, Michael Shoffner, Austin Shoffner, Will Barnes, and Connor Katz.
A graveside service for family members will be held Monday, April 25, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Fall Branch Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Carl Strickler and Rev. Victor Wallace officiating.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Washington County Humane Society, 525 Sells Ave., Johnson City, TN 37604.
