Peggy Newlin Crawford Sharpe passed into the hands of Angels on the evening of May 10, 2023, in Kingsport, TN, at the age of 97. She was born on February 16, 1926, in Raleigh, NC, to Emma Virginia Newlin Crawford and George Seymour Crawford. Peggy grew up in the historic Oakwood neighborhood and had a wonderful childhood with her two younger sisters. She graduated from Hugh Morrison High School in Raleigh and Peace College and attended UNCG Women’s College. Peggy married Emerson E Sharpe, Sr. in 1949, and moved to Charlotte, NC.
She was a member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh before joining First United Methodist Church in Charlotte where she was very active for many years. Peggy cared for preschool children during worship and was a volunteer church receptionist among other things. She was also active in Charity League of Charlotte and her longtime bridge club. Peggy loved beach trips, going to movies and playing board games with her grandchildren. Many remember her for her good heart and coconut cake.
Peggy was predeceased by her parents; and her husband, Emerson Sharpe, of 47 years.
She is survived by her son, Emerson E Sharpe, Jr. (Jennifer) of Kingsport, TN; daughter, Sarah D Sharpe (Roy Terry) of McCleansville, NC; grandson, Dr. Emerson E Sharpe III and fiancé Kaylyn of Denver, CO; granddaughter, McKenzie S Hutchinson (Dr. Ryan) of Nashville, TN; great grandchildren, Beckett and Eliza Hutchinson; sisters, Barbara Stanley of Raleigh, NC and Sarah Bryan of Pensacola, FL; and a number of nieces and nephews and their families.
Thank you to the caregivers at Baysmont House at Asbury Place, The Blake of Kingsport, and First Light Home Care of Charlotte for their care of Peggy.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Montlawn Memorial Park and Cemetery in Raleigh, NC.
