Kingsport - Philip Jefferson Shivell, Sr., born January 29, 1922 in Abingdon, VA, died Saturday, November 17th, 2012 at home.

Philip attended Kingsport City Schools and graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School. He graduated from Princeton University with honors in 1943 and attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Tennessee. As a young man, he was active in scouting and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He served in the 28th Infantry Division in the European Theatre during World War II. He was married to Anna Walker Brooks on December 15th, 1944 and they were married for 59 years.

Philip was active in Kingsport business and community relations. He was Chairman of the Board of Slip-not Belting Corporation, and served on the boards of directors of the Chamber of Commerce, The Community Chest, First Tennessee Bank, Salvation Army, Junior Achievement, Sheltered Workshop, Holston Valley Community Hospital, and the Netherland Inn Association. He was also a long time member of the Board of Directors of the Downtown Kingsport Association.

Philip was a past President of the East Tennessee District Fair Association, a former J.C. and named Young Man of the Year in 1951. He was a past President of the Kingsport Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. Philip also was active member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon and Elder, and taught Sunday School for 40 years. He loved his farms and animals, especially horses, and had a champion Guernsey Dairy Herd from which he raised a National Champion milking cow. He imported the first Simmental Bull into the state of Tennessee.

Philip was a beloved husband, father brother, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents, H. J. and Genevieve Shivell and his wife Anna Walker Brooks Shivell.

Philip is survived by his sister, Jane Shivell King and husband Jack; and also by his children, Jeff and wife Eloise, David and wife Nicki, Laura and husband Randell Drayne, and John and wife Kim; also by special daughter, Barbara Garrad. He has six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 12 to 2 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church. Services will be held at 2 p.m. with The Rev. Dr. David A. Cagle officiating.

Interment will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
