Powell H. King, 87, passed away on Sunday, August 5, 2012, at Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native of Louisville, Kentucky and had lived in Kingsport, Tennessee since 1951.
He had been a member of First Christian Church, Kingsport, Tennessee since 1952. Powell held many positions throughout the years in the church including youth class teacher, usher, building maintenance, Assistant Sunday School Secretary, Christmas Basket Committee, Golden Club and the Men's BYKOTA Class.
Powell played three seasons of baseball in Kingsport, Tennessee and in the Class D Appalachian League 1949-1951. He was a member of VFW Post 3382, the American Legion Post #3 for over 40 years and was a World War II veteran. Mr. King was also active in Western Square and Round Club Dancing for over 40 years.
He worked for Texaco Wholesale Distributor Warehouse in Kingsport and Johnson City, Tennessee from 1951 through 1986, in sales. Powell also worked part time for the City of Kingsport as a games offical, coached youth baseball and supervised basketball games for youth and adults for over 48 years. He was also a member of Kingsport Parks and Recreation and Kingsport Senior Citizens.
Powell was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Geneva King, and brothers, Paul L. King and David L. King.
He is survived by two brothers, Gene B. King of Tampa Florida and Charles A. King and wife, Roberta of Killeen, Texas, and by several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 8 from 5-7:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson, Kingsport.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, August 9, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at First Christian Church with Minister Phip Sams officiating.
Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park with military honors by Tennessee National Guard Honor Guard and VFW Post # 4933.
