Powell Lee Hovis, 80, of Kingsport, passed away Thursday, December 31, 2015. Powell was a teacher and coach at Church Hill High School, TN, Riviera Beach High School, Howell Watkins Jr. High, John F. Leonard High School and retired from Palm Beach High School, FL. He graduated from ETSU where he played football. He was a member of the committee that brought football back to ETSU. Powell was a member of Sullivan Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Hazel Hovis, twin brother, Charles S. Hovis; and brother-in-law, Jerry Richardson.
Powell is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sandra Hovis of Kingsport; son, Mark Hovis and wife, Christ of Ft. Wayne, IN; daughter, Rebecca Voight and husband, John of Waukegan, IL; son, Steven Hovis of Kingsport; 6 grandchildren, Darah, Kayla, Kathryn, August, Joshua and Jarrett Dylan; 2 sisters, Jeannine Hodges and Sharron Richardson, both of Kingsport; Aunts, Aleen Steadman of Kingsport, and Jean Powell of Bristol; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 4-6:00 pm at Sullivan Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 6:00 pm with Rev. Jeff Strong officiating.
The graveside service will be conducted on Monday at 11:00 am at East Lawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Stanley Hodges, Roger Hodges, Anthony Richardson, Jeff Richardson, August Voight and Mark Hovis.
