Ralph Garland Abernathy, 73, Kingsport, TN, passed away Saturday morning, August 4th, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness. Ralph was born in Lincolnton, NC and grew up in Gastonia, NC. He received his B.S. degree in mathematics from NC State University in 1961. Ralph began his career with Eastman as a systems analyst and retired after more 30 years of service. An avid sports fan and animal lover, Ralph was a man of few words but loved by everyone.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Pauline Abernathy, sister, Claudette Hutchinson and brother, Jerry Abernathy.
Ralph is survived by his wife of 50 years, Brenda G. Abernathy; two daughters, Cydne Abernathy of Charleston, SC, and Stephanie Abernathy Benson and son-in-law, Mike Benson of Knoxville, TN; sister Sue Lavalla and husband, Kris of Raleigh, NC; two brothers, Mark Abernathy and wife, Sue of Rock Hill, SC, and Danny Abernathy and wife, Donna of Kings Mt, NC; special friends, Ray and Mary Olinger; and his beloved cats.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 7th from 4-6:00 pm at Hamlett-Dobson, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow at 6:00 pm with Rev. Kim Goddard officiating.
Entombment services will be conducted at 11 a.m Wednesday, August 8th at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Marcus Abernathy, David Bowery, Willard Bowery, Gary Crowder, Ray Olinger and Tom Owens.
