Ralph Jack Coomer

Ralph Jack Coomer, 73, of Kingsport, died Monday morning, April 28, 2008, at Durham Regional Hospital/Duke Health System in Durham, North Carolina, after a brief illness.

Born in Lee County, Virginia, he had resided in Kingsport since 1962. Mr. Coomer served in the Strategic Air Command of the U. S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. In October of 1967 he and his brother Jennings opened and operated the first Krispy Kreme Doughnut franchise in Upper East Tennessee. He actively managed the business until his death. Mr. Coomer was also owner of Seaver's Bakery in Johnson City. He was an avid golfer and loved jelly beans.

His parents, Roxy and Vonda Coomer; two sisters, Reba Hamilton and Madeline Douglas; and three brothers, Sam, J. B. and Jennings, preceded him in death.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Ethel Coomer of the home; one daughter, Stephanie C. Davis and husband Beau of Bristol, Virginia; two sons, Michael Coomer and wife Anne, Brian Coomer and wife Brenda of Kingsport; five grandchildren, Anna Davis, Abbey Davis, Katharine Coomer, Jack Coomer, and Christina Coomer; three brothers, Curtis Coomer of South Carolina, Harry Coomer of Louisiana, Wayne Coomer of Washington; two special nephews, Larry Coomer of Kingsport, Ralph Coomer of North Carolina; two special nieces, Sandra Thorpe, Ramona Claman, Kingsport, TN; and several other nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at St. Dominic Catholic Church. A Mass of Resurrection will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the church with Rev. Charles Burton officiating.

Entombment services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Oak Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum with Deacon Frank Fischer officiating. Military rites will be conducted by Charles DeWitt Byrd Post #3382 of VFW. Honorary pallbearers will be Beau Davis, Betty Armstrong, Sam Moore, Mark Preston, Larry Coomer, and Ralph Coomer.
