Ray Cecil Carter, 78, Kiwanis Towers, died at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009, at Indian Path Medical Center.
Born in Scott County, Virginia, he lived in Detroit, Michigan, where he worked for Dodge Motor Corporation. Ray also worked with Holston Army Ammunition Plant and later was owner and operator of Carter Sanitation Service. He was a Baptist.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Hassie Carter; his parents, Myrtle and George Carter; and a brother, Sammy Carter.
Surviving are two daughters, Peggy Vicars and husband Ronnie of Church Hill, Barbara Roberts and husband Gary of Kingsport; two sons, Danny Carter and wife Melissa of Jonesborough, Ray Carter Jr. of Kingsport; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six sisters, Jean Rhoton and husband Orville, Billie Neeley, Mary Snapp and husband George, Lena Beasley and husband Duane, Diana Franklin and husband Jim, all of Kingsport and Reba Robinson and husband Danny of Lynchburg, Virginia; and two brothers, Jack Carter and wife Patsy of Gate City, and Edgar "Ed" Carter of Kingsport.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with Rev. Willie Neeley officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Holston View Cemetery.
