Rebecca Lynne Mayfield, 67, of Kingsport, died Tuesday morning, June 8, 2010, at her home. A long-time resident of Kingsport, she was a native of Caroleen, NC, and a graduate of Needham B. Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC. She attended the University of Tennessee Center for Government Training, completing the Public Supervisor Certificate Program, and Kingsport courses on Risk Management and AARP Tax Aid. She had been employed by the City of Kingsport for 19 years, working at the Senior Center.
Rebecca was an active member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church and the Sojourner Sunday School Class. She was also active in a number of civic organizations, including the Shepherd Center, of which she was President. She gave dedicated service to Contact Concern and the area Agency on Aging.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hattie Cornelia Causby Grigg and Dr. Wendell Randolph Grigg, who pastored churches in Georgia and North Carolina, and served on the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board; and sister-in-law, Betty Grigg.
She is survived by her husband, George Mayfield, of Kingsport; daughter, Sonya Henderson and husband, Craig, and their children, Corinne, Zachary, Bennett, Molly, Grace, and Josiah, of Cookeville, TN; daughter Leigh Dunn and husband, Jeff, and their children, Elijah and Jonah, of Atlanta, GA; son, Craig Blevins, and wife, Heather, and their children, Noah and Micah, of Jonesborough, TN; stepdaughter, Brenda Mercer and husband, Jim, and their sons, Jeff, Michael, and Preston, of Kingsport; stepson, Larry Mayfield and wife, Tammy, and their children, Cameron and Ashlynn, of Charlotte, NC; brother, Irvin Grigg and wife, Ruth Anne, and their sons, Lloyd and Carl, Kernersville, NC; brother, Kenneth Grigg, and children, Alexandra, of Philadelphia, PA, and Andrew, of Washington, D.C.; sister, Dorcas Grigg-Saito and husband, Yoshio, and daughters, Katrina and Emily, of Boston, MA; brother, Randy Grigg and wife, Nancy Helms Grigg, and their children, Jill, Mark, Michael, Ellen, and Katie, of Chapel Hill, NC.
The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 4 - 6 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. Services will be conducted on Monday at 10 a.m. at First Broad Street United Methodist Church, with Rev. Clark Jenkins and Rev. Jim Harless officiating and music provided by Jenny Rogers. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Craig Blevins, Randy Grigg, Jeff Dunn, Craig Henderson, Larry Mayfield, and Zachary Henderson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the mission program of First Broad Street United Methodist Church, 100 East Church Circle, Kingsport, TN 37660.
