Richard W. "Wedge" Ayers

Richard W. "Wedge" Ayers, 82, of Chuckey, formerly of Kingsport, passed away February 10, 2010, at his home surrounded by his family. R.W. was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church where he served as an usher. He was also a 50 year-member of the Masonic Lodge #688 of Kingsport.

Mr. Ayers attended Tusculum College and graduated from ETSU. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. While in the Army, he won the U.S. Army Boxing Championship of the Alaskan Theatre. He also played professional baseball in Helena, Arkansas, and Kingsport. Mr. Ayers retired from Signal Knitting where he was Personnel Director.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Morgan and Elizabeth Gilmer Ayers; brothers, William, David, and Hugh Ayers; and sisters, Charlotte Powers and Gilmer Harton.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Lou Nottingham Ayers; three daughters, Jacque Ayers, Kathy Ayers and husband J. T. Little, and Patty Ayers and husband Jim Karns; three sisters, Virginia Darbee, Anne Havens, and Mary Peterson; brother, Jim Ayers; sisters-in-law, Edie Ayers, Anita Ayers, and Virginia Peavler; brothers-in-law, Bob Peterson, P.T. Nottingham, and John Nottingham; grandchildren, Julie Harrison, Dr. Elizabeth Harrison and husband Dr. Eric Knoche, and Breet Creasman and wife Beth; six step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at Asbury United Methodist Church in Greeneville. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. David Woody and Rev. Jeannie Higgins officiating. Music will be provided by Keith and Myna Williams.

Burial will follow Oak Hill Memorial Park with Military Rites conducted by American Legion Posts #3/265. Pallbearers will be Brett Creasman, Dr. Eric Knoche, J.T. Little, Nick Harrison, Buck Mathes, and Kyle Huffman.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Caris Hospice of Greeneville for their care and support.
