Richard Allen Gilbert went to be with the Lord October 5, 2010, at the age of 52. He was better known as: Gibby, Ricky, Rick, Daddy Rick, and many other variations. He was an avid member of the Boy Scouts of America and devoted many years to Troop 18. He was known for his relentless compassion for others, love of the outdoors, and most importantly his quirky sense of humor. His Christian life began at a very young age, and throughout his life his testimony of love, hope, compassion, and forgiveness provided a passageway for many others who needed guidance along their path in life. His favorite verse was: "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." Isaiah 40:31. His life on earth provides a legacy to many, and knowing he is soaring above us and watching over us should provide comfort to all.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Mary Reed and Larry Gilbert, and grandparents; Irene Doran and Hatcher Doran.
Surviving him are his wife of 30 years, Rebekah Gilbert; daughter, Rachel Myers and husband, Clint; son, Will Gilbert and wife, Kaitlin; brother, Scott Gilbert and wife, Janie; sister, Kathy Gilbert, all of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews, several cousins, many beloved friends, and Best Friend and Companion, Ralphie.
The family will receive friends Saturday, October 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Wheeler United Methodist Church, and a Memorial Service will follow with Pastor Ronnie Abram officiating.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Troop 18 Boy Scouts: 617 Ridge Dr., Piney Flats, TN 37686.
In keeping with his devotion to the love and happiness of others, always remember this simple yet powerful truth: " Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails." 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
