Richard Lee Hill

Richard Lee Hill died on May 18, 2012 at the VA Mountain Home Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born Feb. 25, 1935, and raised in Knoxville, TN. Richard graduated from Knoxville Central High School in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army's 4th Infantry Division, received his B.S. degree from UT-Knoxville in 1959 and MS degree from the University of South Fla. He had been employed by Sperry, IMC, Kingsport Press and Virginia Tech. Richard taught at ETSU as an adjunct professor for many years.

He was a member of Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church for 42 years, an ordained deacon and Boy Scout leader. His hobbies included building balsa wood airplanes and working Neighborhood Watch duty. He belonged to the Sinking Creek Masonic Lodge and American Legion Post No. 3; was a life member of the Optimist Club past state secretary-treasurer, volunteering for many years to sell Christmas trees and worked middle school concession stands to benefit youth - he never met a stranger. Richard and Evelyn had enjoyed spending many winters in Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee Bruce Hill and Thelma Hill Hirth.

Richard is survived by Mary Evelyn Hill, wife of 55 years; son and wife, Rick and Janeil Hill; daughter and husband, Anne Hill Trask and Bruce Trask; grandchildren, Nicholas and Maggie Sherwood; step-granddaughter, Chestney Trask, and step-great-grandchild, Shannon Elizabeth Newcomb.

Visitation will be conducted on Sunday, May 20th from 1-3:00 pm at Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 pm with The Rev. Mr. J. Thomas Phillips and The Rev. Daniel S. Clark officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted on Monday, May 21st at 11:00 am at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Military graveside rites bill be conducted by American Legion Posts 3/265. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church, c/o the Renovation Fund, 213 Colonial Heights Road, Kingsport, TN 37663; or to the Optimist Club, P.O. Box 5801, Kingsport, TN 37663.
