Richard Watson

Richard Morey Watson, 82, died Wednesday December 5, 2007 after a brief illness.

Born in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, he was raised in Havana, Cuba and had been a resident of Kingsport since 1953. He attended Auburn University where he received his bachelor?s degree and master?s degree both in chemistry.

Mr. Watson was a veteran of World War II serving in the infantry in the European theatre. He was attached to the Rainbow Division.

He began his career with Eastman Kodak in Rochester, New York, in 1951. He joined Tennessee Eastman Company in 1953 and became senior chemist in the Acid Division. He retired in 1987 after 36 years. At the time of his retirement, he was a development associate. He was a local section chairman of the American Society of Quality Control and served as a Chemical Division chairman of ASQC. He also was a member of the American Chemical Society.

Mr. Watson served with the Boy Scouts of America for more than 25 years. He was a scoutmaster for Troop 255. He received the Pioneer?s Award, the Silver Beaver Award, and Woodbadge Award. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Sequoyah Council. He was an active member of Waverly Road Presbyterian Church and had served as both an Elder and a Deacon.

Surviving are his wife, Jean Smith Watson; one daughter, Nancy Watson Reese and husband John Theodore Reese; Centreville, VA; two sons, Gilbert Morey Watson, Richard Alan Watson and wife Melanie Watson; all of Kingsport, TN; five grandchildren; Kara Lynn Watson, Alan Thomas Watson and wife Jamie; Branson Charles Reese, Benjamin Watson Reese, Taylor Elizabeth Reese; and one great-grandson, William James Watson; sister Alice Sophie Johnson and husband Dr. Marvin Johnson, Lake Butler, FL.

A Memorial Service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Waverly Road Presbyterian Church with Rev. Daniel S. Clark officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Waverly Road Presbyterian Church, 1415 Waverly Road, Kingsport, TN 37660.
