Rita May Knox

Rita May Knox, 84, of Kingsport, TN, originally from New Orleans, LA, departed this life on August 23, 2009.

She spent her life sharing a generous, loving spirit with others, and was involved in numerous volunteer activities throughout her life. She was an active member of Catholic Daughters of America for decades, and a devoted volunteer to the Travelers Aid Society, Girl Scouts, and a religious educator in her church. For the past four years she reveled in being "Granny Knox" to the children currently in the 4th grade at St. Dominic School.

She enjoyed doing needlework, and had a fascination with lighthouses, evidenced by her extensive collection of books, photographs, and miniature lighthouses. She had an outgoing personality with a gift of always drawing people to her.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Jack H. Knox, parents Joseph K, and Walburger H. Smith, and brothers Farrell and Louis Smith.

She is survived by her two daughters; Janel K. Lange and husband, Deacon Robert Lange of Kingsport, Jaren K. Lowell, and husband Dr. Robert Lowell of Blacksburg, VA, six grandchildren; Jerin Higgins & husband Daniel of Austin, TX, Robert Lange, Jr. and wife Linda of Knoxville, TN, Russell Lange of Miami, FL, Jonathan Lowell, James Lowell, and Joshua Lowell of Blacksburg, VA; five great-grandchildren, William, Theresa, Andrew and Eleanor Higgins of Austin, TX, and Marissa Lange of Knoxville, TN, her sister Catherine Crawford of New Orleans, LA and brother Emmett Smith of New Orleans.

The funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Michael Nolan at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 2517 N. John B. Dennis Hwy., Kingsport, TN on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at 6:00 PM. Family will accept visitors at the church beginning at 4:00 PM until the mass. Interment will be in New Orleans, LA.

The family wishes to thank the staffs of Wexford House, Holston Manor, The Place, Wellington Place, Indian Path Medical Center, as well as Dr. Marta Wayt, and the St. Dominic family for their caring contributions to Rita's quality of life.
