Rita Imogene Skeen Sams, 91, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 3, 2012 at Indian Path Medical Center. She was born on September 24, 1920 in Bold Camp Pound, Virginia.
Imogene was a devoted wife and mother and a loving and giving person who enjoyed cooking delicious meals for her family. Her love of people was exceeded only by her love of God. Mrs. Sams read her bible daily and had an extensive knowledge of the scripture. What is most important, she applied that knowledge to her daily life. The joy of her salvation caused her to spread the love of God to friends, acquaintances and strangers that she met in her daily life. Imogene viewed her association with others as a personal ministry, frequently sending cooked meals and cards to those who experienced sickness, loneliness or just calling to check on them.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Sams; her parents, Joseph M. Skeen and Margaret Otela Skeen; sister, Reone Skeen; brothers, Eugene Skeen, Franklin Skeen, Carlos Skeen and Roosevelt Skeen.
Imogene is survived by her children, Billy Paul Sams of Oak Ridge, TN, Lois Young and husband, Ralph of Kingsport, Margaret Hickam and husband, Jeff and Wayne Sams and wife, Jenny of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Matthew Sams and fiancée, Lynn Eubanks, Sara Sams, Alex Young, Stephanie Hickam, Drew Sams and Robert Young. She is also survived by a sister, Estelle Patton and husband, Frankie and brother, Richard Skeen of Pound, VA; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 6th from 5 to 7:00 pm at the Glenwood Campus of Indian Springs Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 pm with Rev. Tiger Brooks and Dr. Roc Collins officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted on Thursday, June 7th at 10:00 am at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
