Robert Francis Fanslow, 81, of Kingsport, passed away Tuesday morning April 22, 2008, in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, due to ALS Lou Gehrig's Disease.
Born on June 26, 1926, in Yankton, South Dakota, Bob was the oldest son of Francis and Gertrude Tschann Fanslow. He was graduated from Yankton College where he was a championship debater. He then completed graduate studies at the University of Iowa. He taught high school history and coached debating in Hawarden, Iowa, for two years. He then responded to a job ad posted nationally by Ross N. Robinson, Superintendent of the Kingsport City Schools. Six weeks after beginning his position at Dobyns-Bennett High School, Bob was drafted into the military during the Korean Conflict. He served with the Fifth General Hospital, Stuttgart, Germany, and then returned to his teaching position in Kingsport.
Mr. Fanslow taught a wide variety of courses in the Social Studies Department for the next 39 years where he also served as Department Chair. He co-initiated the curriculum for International Relations and Federal Government in the 1950s and structured the curriculum for Advanced Placement American History in the mid-1970s. He also served as an adjunct professor at East Tennessee State University and taught in the Institute for Continued Learning at the Kingsport University Center. Bob spoke to many civic and church groups over the years on a variety of topics ranging from conflict in the Middle East to the establishment of political parties in the United States. He was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church and a member of the Kingsport Retired Teachers Association.
He is survived by his wife Linda; four children, Bob and wife Jan, Cummings, Georgia, Mary, Kingsport, Jane and husband Larry, Fayetteville, Georgia, and Tom, Asheville, North Carolina; two brothers, James and wife Corinne, St. Paul, Minnesota, and Donald, Santa Fe, New Mexico; and three nephews and one niece. The family wishes to extend special gratitude to his caregiver, Chuck Witt, Bluffton, South Carolina. The family also appreciates the multitude of cards and prayers of churches and individuals for Dad during the last two years.
The family will receive friends at St. Dominic Catholic Church from 6-8 pm on Friday, April 25, followed by a Christian Wake Prayer Service at 8pm. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 am, Saturday, April 26, at St. Dominic Catholic Church. A service of interment will take place at a later date at the Tschann family plot, Calvary Cemetery, Northfield, Minnesota.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Building Fund at St. Dominic Catholic Church, to the College Scholarship Fund at First Broad Street United Methodist Church, or to the Robert Fanslow History Scholarship Fund, c/o Dobyns-Bennett Activities Office, Dobyns-Bennett High School.
