Robert Wesley Holtzclaw, age 87, died November 6, 2010 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport.
Born in Weldon, NC, he moved with his family to East Flat Rock, NC at an early age, and from there to Canton, NC. He graduated from Canton High School in 1941. He was enrolled at North Carolina State University when World War II broke out. He joined the Army Air Corp and became a pilot. After the war's end, he returned to NC State where he received his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1947, graduating first in his class. After graduation, he was employed by Tennessee Eastman Company and moved to Kingsport, retiring in 1985. He was a licensed engineer in the state of Tennessee.
He was a member of Waverly Road Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and Elder. For a number of years he also volunteered with the Kingsport Christian Ministries Center.
In his retirement years he enjoyed playing golf and traveling, but time with his family was the most important activity.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, parents Robert and Leta Garren Holtzclaw of Canton, NC; brothers, Wesley Franklin Holtzclaw of Canton, NC and William Cleaton Holtzclaw of Kingsport; and a sister, Maxine Holtzclaw Duke of Canton, NC.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Betsy Benson Holtzclaw of Kingsport; son, James Robert Holtzclaw and wife Priscilla Holtzclaw of Charleston, SC; son, Michael Wesley Holtzclaw and wife Deborah Holtzclaw of Kingsport; daughter, Mary Jane Holtzclaw Alley and husband Robert Alley of Kingsport; grandchildren, Bobby and wife Tia Holtzclaw, Arthur and wife Deb Holtzclaw, Wesley Holtzclaw and Marielle Holtzclaw, Molly Holtzclaw Griggs husband Kevin Griggs, and Jesse, Mikey, and Billy Alley; great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Katie Griggs.
A memorial service will be conducted 11am Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at Waverly Road Presbyterian Church in Kingsport with Reverend Dan Clark officiating. The family will receive friends after the service.
