Rudolph Shelton Calhoun, Sr., went to be with the Lord Sunday, August 24, 2008, at his home with his family at his bedside.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. Mr. Calhoun worked in a family-owned logging company, with Calhoun Fencing, and retired from Lester's Road Service as a diesel mechanic. His favorite job was working his farm with his family. He served in World War II in the U.S. Army.
Rudolph was preceded in death by his loving wife of 71 years, Stella Calhoun; four children, Hamilton, Wanda, Vivian, and June; parents, Corbin and Fannie Calhoun; a brother, George Calhoun; a sister, Nannie Gamble; and a granddaughter, Becky Calhoun.
Surviving are three sons, Roby and wife Gladys, Scottie and wife Linda, R. S. and wife Donna; four daughters, Sue Thomas and husband Eddie, Martha Elliott and husband Steve, Anita McGhee and husband Ronald, and Kathy Hite and husband Wilbur; twenty-four grandchildren; thirty-five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Lydia Davidson, Imalove Absher, Pauline Gamble, and Nelda Simpson and husband Alley.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, August 26th, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport; and any time at Mr. Calhoun's home.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 27th, at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Danny Sykes and Rev. Roy Lane officiating. Burial will follow at Calhoun Family Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #3/265. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
