S. Louise Dickson Hawk, age 100 and 6 months, born November 9, 1917, went to heaven on Wednesday, May 16, 2018. She was born and raised in Kingsport and graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School. She worked at several jobs and retired from The University of Tennessee, having received The Chancellors Citation for Extraordinary Service to the university.
Lou was saved at an early age and taught the card class at Mountain View Methodist Church. She was a member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church and had taught Sunday school for many years. Her love for the Lord Jesus and others was evident in her prayer book, containing hundreds of names that she prayed for each night. She was a giver of her time, food, words of wisdom and hospitality and used every opportunity to bless others. Louise enjoyed writing her cookbook and giving it to others.
She resided at Preston Place Suites Assisted Living. The family extends a special thanks to the staff for their loving care.
Lou was preceded in death by her husband, Charles William Hawk, Sr.; daughter, Nancy Carolyn Hawk and Lana Hawk Carter; parents, John Wilburn Dickson and Carrie Hicks Dickson; brothers, Charles Hicks (Bud) Dickson and John Wilburn (Bill) Dickson; and sister, Agnes Dickson Wininger.
She is survived by her daughter, Jean Hawk Gibson and husband, Bob and their children, John and Lisa Gibson, and their children, Melissa Louise and Daniel Ruck, and Tanner and Courtney Gibson and their children Levi and Lillie; Jim and Dana Gibson and their children, Kristen and Adam Reed, Colton, Caden, Carleigh, Katherine and Kimberly Gibson; Elliott and Nikki Gibson and their son, Jack Gibson; son-in-law, Jimmy Carter, Jason and Cyndi McDaniel and their children, Gabrielle, Jordan, Joshua and wife, Maddi and their children, Ashlyn, Alisa, Joseph, Jacob, Jayden and Alexia; Justin McDaniel and children, Maddison Rose and Molly; James Richard Carter and James Alvin Carter, John Carter, Robert, Jonathan, Nicholis and Jack, Gernis Schombs and children, Jamie, Dianne and Allison; son, Charles William Hawk, Jr. and wife, Millie Sue and their children; Matthew Hawk and his children, Heidi, Colton and Luke; Andrew and Deanna Hawk and their children, Sawyer and Scout; Chip and Angie Millican, Ruby, Emma, Maggie and Josie Louise; David and Lori Millican and children, Parker, Preston and Davis; and Cynthia Millican-Lewis and son, Nate; and her sister, Peggy Harvey, who was a close friend and a blessing.
The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 pm on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at Colonial Heights Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm with Dr. Greg Burton officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, John Gibson, Jim Gibson, Elliott Gibson, Jason McDaniel, Justin McDaniel, Matthew Hawk, Andrew Hawk, Chip Millican and David Millican. Honorary pallbearers are her great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandsons.
