I read somewhere that most men receive their first flowers at their funeral...

I was 16 when I experienced my first lung collapse. Unfortunately my time hospitalized was long, as usual methods to resolve the condition were unsuccessful and surgery was required. My days were brightened by a woman in housekeeping who could not only take my smartass, doped up on morphine, teenage attitude but could dish it out just as good. The 10 minutes she spent cleaning my room quickly became the highlight of my day throughout my extended stay.

The day before my surgery Sandra stopped in to wish me luck as she was off the next day. I jokingly mentioned that on the day of my surgery I expected a visit and something ridiculous, specific balloons and flowers if I recall correctly, that wouldn't exactly be easy to locate. She fired off some equally as witty remark that made us both laugh. I had no expectation she would fulfill my demand, but the next morning Sandra showed up with everything I asked for and a healthy portion of attitude about how difficult it was to track it all down. I don't recall any other time someone has been so kind to me.

Because of Sandra I know first-hand how a gift of flowers can brighten the hardest days. It's something I'm eternally grateful for and wish everyone could know.
