Sandra Jane (Smith) Hughes received her eternal crown of life April 30, 2015 after a short struggle with lung cancer.
Sandy's life was shared among many. She remained close with her childhood friends and maintained many, many close relationships in the years following. Sandy taught biology at North Greene High School. She was a preschool teacher at Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church where she and Harold attended and served for many years. She was active at Celebration Church and was involved in several community groups and events over the years (needlepoint, duplicate bridge clubs, Meals on Wheels, etc). Sandy and Harold greatly enjoyed traveling in their Airstream travel trailer. Through their TCPC ownership lot and WBCCI Airstream Club, they enjoyed many airstream rallies all over the USA. The many friendships formed through camping were priceless. In all activities, Sandy was known first for her devotion to Christ and secondly for her food ministry given to anyone in need. There have not been many who knew her that haven't sat as a guest at her table. How fitting it is, she is welcomed to a great feast hosted by our Lord Jesus Himself. Well done good and faithful servant!
She was preceded in death by her father, Algie Smith.
Sandy is survived by her husband of 53 years and high school sweetheart, Harold Hughes of Kingsport; her daughter, Tiffany Mathias (Rob) and beloved grandson, Michael Mathias of Nashville; her mother, Ruby Kate Smith formerly of Chuckey; her brother, Terry Smith (Judy) of Savannah, GA; and her niece and nephews, Derrick Smith, Aaron Smith, Katie Smith, and Kyle Smith.
There will be a private internment for the family. Pallbearers will be Dr. Aaron Smith, Derrick Smith, Brian Becknell, Britt Becknell, Dr. Raymond Kidwell, Gary Dawn, Barry Smith, Homer Smith, and Michael Mathias.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 pm Saturday, May 2, 2015 at Sandy's childhood church of Pleasant Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 13385 Kingsport Highway, Chuckey, TN 37641 with Dr. Robert Russell of Celebration Church officiating. The family will receive friends after the service.
Memorials can be given to St Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
