Skip Slaughter, 72, Kingsport, was born in Kingsport on April 20, 1935. He lost his battle with cancer and entered into eternal life at 3:45 a.m. Sunday January 6, 2008.
He graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in 1953, where many remember his football and baseball accomplishments. Skip married his childhood sweetheart in 1956 and graduated from the University of Tennessee at Memphis with a degree in Pharmacy in 1957. He began his pharmacy career at Medical Arts Pharmacy.
Responding to God?s call to be an evangelistic missionary, he entered Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA in 1960, and graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Divinity degree. Following graduation, he was commissioned by the Presbyterian Church in the United States as an evangelistic missionary to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Skip, his wife, and three sons went to Brussels, Belgium for one year of language study before going to their mission assignment in Africa. During his time in Africa, he worked in village areas, preaching God?s Word and using his pharmacy skills to assist with medical needs. After returning to Kingsport, he enjoyed preaching in area churches and speaking in many schools. He taught a young adult Sunday School class for 25 years, and served as an elder and deacon throughout his lifetime. He was a member of Arcadia Presbyterian Church, PCA at the time of his death.
After returning to Kingsport in 1966, he owned and operated Skip?s Pharmacy. He also was co-owner and pharmacist at Indian Springs Pharmacy. Later, he worked at Rite Aid and CVS. He was working in Kingsport at Food City Pharmacy on Eastman Road at the time of his medical retirement.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul H. and Gladys Slaughter; brother, Don Slaughter; and twin sons, William Bill Paul and Donald Don Edward Slaughter.
He will be greatly missed by all, but especially by the family who survives him: his wife of 51 years, Dottie Teter Slaughter, Kingsport; son, John R. Slaughter and wife, Elizabeth M. Slaughter; granddaughter, Mallory L. Slaughter; grandson, William E. Slaughter, all of Gray; sister, Louise Slaughter Banyas and husband, Michael, Westminster, SC; sister-in-law, Carolyn V. Slaughter, Kingsport; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. A Service of Praise and Thanksgiving will be held at First Broad Street United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. John M. Irwin officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Park.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the ?DB Class of ?53?.
