Solomon Clarence "Pete" Speer, 94, of Kingsport, died Sunday, May 18, 2014 at James H. Quillen V.A. Community Living Center. He was born in Scott County, Virginia and had lived in Kingsport for more than 70 years. Mr. Speer was the owner and operator of Fuller Street Coal Yard and Grocery. He was a Veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army. He was a proud participant in the Battle of the Bulge which history lauds as the turning point of the war in Europe. He was of the Baptist faith and a proud member of the American Legion Hammond Post #3.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Sadie Templeton Speer; parents, William Harrison Speer and Mollie Mae Childress Speer; four sisters, Myrtle Bledsoe, Edith Bowen, Grace Berry and Maude Pearcy; and three brothers, Fred, George Marvin and Ronald Kelly Speer.
Pete is survived by his daughter, Jo Clark-Moody and husband, James W. Moody of Kingsport; grandson, Jonathan Clark and wife, Rebecca of Kingsport; great-grandson Garrett Clark; two sisters-in-law, Goldie Speer and Wanda Morgan; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 11:00 am-12:00 pm at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 pm with Dr. Ron Davis officiating. Burial to follow in Oak Hill Memorial Park. Military Rites will be conducted by American Legion Posts 3/265.
