Staff Sargent JD Hickman, 68, of Kingsport passed away after a long illness at the VA Medical Center on Sunday July 5, 2015. He was a lifelong resident of Kingsport, except during his time serving in the military. He was a member of New Zion Faith Center. JD graduated from Dobyns-Bennett HS, Alaska Methodist University, and UT Law School. He was an accomplished defense attorney and lecturer on Religion and ROTC Leader for Eastern Kentucky University. These all showed his love for the argument and intensity of conviction. A loving spouse and caring soul, he always was quick with a joke or offer of help to anyone in need.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Irene; brother, Bill Hickman; sister, Betty Dean; and his son SFC Jason Omar Bradley Hickman.
JD is survived by his wife, Judy Hickman; his step-son Chad Franklin & partner Mike Glovier; his sister, Pauline Harper; three grandsons, Hayden, Landon, & Clayton Hickman and their mother Tiffany Hickman Kennedy; Jason's half-brother, David Billheimer and his mother, Charlotte; sister-in-laws, Lou Ann Hickman & Hester Rush; brother-in-laws, Wade Harper, Ronnie Rush; nephews, Matt Hickman, Dennis Hickman, Danny Short, Mike Rush, Greg Rush; nieces, Penny Ketron, Debbie Watson, Kim Killian, Tammy Rush, Tina White.
In keeping with JD's wishes the family will have burial only with Military Honors, with The Reverend Ernest Widby officiating the graveside service at the Mountain Home National Cemetery on August 10, 2015 at 1:45pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans at DAV.org.
