Stella Wanda Calhoun, born January 9, 1917, in Gate City, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home with her family at her bedside Monday, February 11, 2008, at 4:50 a.m. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother and worked hard all her life raising her children.
Mrs. Calhoun was a member of Cowans Branch Baptist Church where she attended until her illness.
She was preceded in death by her father, Harvey Grim; her mother, Garnett Grim; four children, June Vaughn, Hamilton Calhoun, Wanda Ruth Calhoun, Vivian Ann Calhoun and granddaughter, Rebecca Calhoun; brothers, Jay, Glenn, Willard, Harvey, Ralph, and Grady; and sisters, Ola Minnick and Fannie Jones.
Surviving are her husband of seventy years, Rudolph S. Calhoun; seven children, Roby Calhoun and wife Gladys, Scottie Calhoun and wife Linda, Sue Thomas and husband Eddie, Martha Elliott and husband Steve, R. S. Calhoun and wife Donna, Anita McGhee and husband Ron, and Kathy Hite and husband Wilbur; twenty-four grandchildren; thirty-five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Cowans Branch Baptist Church. Friends and family may visit any time at the home of Rudolph Calhoun.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Cowans Branch Baptist Church with Reverend Raymond Conkin and Reverend Mike Fields officiating. Music will be provided by New Grace Trio.
Graveside services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Calhoun Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons.
