Sue Carrell Dallas, 77, passed away quietly early Friday morning October 10, 2008 at her son's home in Oak Ridge, with family members attending her.
Sue was born in Stuttgart, Arkansas. At the age of nine, she and her family moved to Memphis, where she attended White Haven High School and graduated as class valedictorian. She attended Southwestern University at Memphis now Rhodes College, where she graduated after three years with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. Sue was a member of Alpha Omicron Omega sorority.
She and Dr. John L. Dallas were married in Memphis following her college graduation, and thereafter lived in Knoxville, Suitland, Maryland, Cumberland, Kentucky, and finally settled in Kingsport in 1957.
Mrs. Dallas was a member and volunteer for Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church for the past 50 years. She was active in numerous civic and social groups throughout her life in Kingsport.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Dallas, to whom she was married 40 years; daughter, Susan Dallas Grubbs; father, Homer Evott Carrell; and brother, Milton Scott Carrell.
She is survived by daughter, Nancy C. Dallas and her husband, Charles E. Cheney of Hartselle, AL; son, Dr. John S. Dallas and his wife, Dr. Dara V. Dallas of Arlington, TX; son-in-law, Frank D. Grubbs of Knoxville; daughter, Donna D. Balliet and her husband, David Balliet of Norcross, GA; son, Dr. William S. Dallas and his wife, Julie S. Dallas of Oak Ridge; twelve grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and aunts, uncles, and cousins. Other survivors include her mother, Mrs. Erna M. Carrell of Charlottesville, VA.; sister, Mrs. Nancy C. Whitley of Memphis; brother, William E. Carrell and his wife, Mary Alice M. Carrell of Anderson, IN; brother, Finis D. Carrell and his wife, Charlotte P. Carrell of Charlottesville, VA.; and sister-in-law, Mrs. Colleen G. Dallas of Martinsville, VA.
Special friends include Mrs. Scottie Akard, Mrs. Jeanne Jones, Mrs. Jean Crowe, Mrs. Anna Dickison, Mrs. Julie Furbush, Ms. Nancy Furbush, Mrs. Betty Mason, Mrs. Billie Mecke, Mrs. Ann Hertel, Mrs. Martha Rector, Mrs. Jane Smith, Mrs. Jane Wright, and Mrs. Pat Hungate of Covenant Hospice Care in Oak Ridge.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at the church at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. J. Thomas Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
