Susan T. (Smith) Dedrick, 90, Asbury Place, Baysmont, Kingsport, Tennessee passed away peacefully Sunday morning, April 14 at Wilcox Hall following a brief illness.
She was born in Jackson, MS, September 16, 1922. She moved to Kingsport after WWII in 1947. She was a longtime member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church, and also attended Wheeler Memorial United Methodist Church in Blountville. She retired from Kingsport Power Co. in 1987, was a volunteer at the Holston Valley Hospital Hospitality Shop, and a sustaining member of the Kingsport Junior League. She especially loved reading and playing bridge with long-time friends.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Fulton and Martha Gwin Hutton Thompson, and a loving step-mother, Martha Louise Thompson, all of Jackson, MS. She was married in 1943 to Capt. Thomas M. Smith, who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps; after WWII they moved to Kingsport, where he was employed at Tennessee Eastman Company until his death in 1963, Later, she was married to James T. Dedrick, a longtime family friend and Kingsport businessman in 1979 until his death in 1989. She was also preceded by a step-son, Thomas G. (Tom) Dedrick in 1990.
She is survived by her two sons, Stephen F. Smith, Loudon, TN; Craig B. Smith, Kingsport; her step-children, James R. (Russ) Dedrick and wife Betty, Farragut, TN, and Marty A. Dedrick, Greeneville, TN. She is also survived by her brother, R. Fulton Thompson and wife Linda, and her sister Judith Thompson Travis and husband Jay, of Jackson, MS; by three grandchildren, Aaron D. Smith, Farragut, Asher B. Smith, Lenoir City, TN, and Anna E. Smith, Farragut; and two step-grandchildren, Carter Dedrick and Blair Dedrick Ortmann.
The Memorial Service will be held at First Broad Street United Methodist Church Chapel in Kingsport on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Jack Weikel officiating. Family will receive friends in the parlor following the service.
