Susan Emma "Susie" Kern

Susan Emma "Susie" Kern, 103, of Kingsport, Tennessee formerly of Rye Cove, Virginia passed away February 7, 2009. She was born at Natural Tunnel, VA on April 6, 1905.

Susie and her late husband, Rufus, were merchants in the Rye Cove community for many years. She enjoyed traveling and attended Orebank Missionary Baptist Church until she was 101. She was a sweet, kind and loving woman who was known for her wonderful sense of humor. She loved her family and spending time with them. She attributed her long life to always being good to everyone.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Kate Tomlinson; first husband, Enoch Miller; second husband, Rufus Kern; son, Guy Kern; grandson, Gary Miller; son-in-law, Jack Powers; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Miller; and sisters, Mattie Lane, Venus Taylor, and Bertie Goode.

Surviving are her daughter, Linda Powers; son, E.L. Miller and wife Margaret; grandsons, Jimmy Miller and wife Connie, Terry Miller and wife Bonnie, and Garnetta Miller; granddaughters, Sharon Clendenen and husband Cecil; Susan Fannon and husband Jack, and Beverly Barnes and husband Ken;daughter-in-law, Susie Kern. She is also survived by several great and great-great grandchildren.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. The funeral services will immediately follow with Pastor David Foster officiating.

Graveside services will be Monday, February 9 at 11:00 a.m. at Holston View Cemetery
with Cecil Kern officiating. It is requested that family and friends meet at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. to go in procession.

Her family would like to express their thanks for the wonderful kindness and loving care shown to our mother during her stay at Holston Manor. Special thanks to Barbara, Pat, Shelby, Lornia, Darliss, Mariam, Eula, Wes and Christine. We would also like to thank Cecil and Wanda Kern, Grover and Irene McDavid, and Pastor Joe Hill who faithfully visited our mother.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.
