Ted Williamson Hagen

Ted Williamson Hagen, Sr. 91, of Kingsport died peacefully on May 13, 2019.

Ted was born in Rochester, New York to the late Roma Williamson Hagen and Bjarne Magnus Hagen. He was the beloved husband of Jean for 66 years until her death in 2013.

Growing up in Kingsport, he graduated early from Dobyns-Bennett High School and joined the U.S. Navy where he served as a member of the Underwater Demolition Team in World War ll.  He met Jean Elizabeth Moore at a Teen Center dance, and they were married in 1947. After graduating from Georgia Tech with a BS degree in Architectural Engineering, he returned to Kingsport to begin working at Tennessee Eastman Company. During his 32 year career with Eastman, he was project manager for numerous building developments in Kingsport and Arkansas as well as the Eastman Kodak sales office in New York City.

After his retirement in 1984, his love for creating buildings and his desire to help others was evident in his volunteer work. He started Holston Habitat for Humanity and served as the first president. Ted was also a member of Kiwanis Club of Kingsport for 63 years. In the early 1990s he continued to share his architectural talent with Kingsport City Schools as a field engineer that included the renovation of several schools.

Ted Hagen was an active member and Elder at Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church for 64 years where he was a Youth Leader, Sunday School teacher, served on several Holston Presbytery committees, and enjoyed faithfully singing in the choir.

Ted grew up in a family of golfers and loved the game. One of the highlights of his life was playing the Augusta National Golf Course and attending the Masters Golf Tournament for many years.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was pre-deceased by his daughter, Leslie Deborah Richmond and his brother, Steven Alan Hagen. He is survived by sons, Dr. Ted Hagen ll and wife Lucie of Kingsport, Tennessee, David M. Hagen and wife Becky of Hephzibah, Georgia, and Mark R. Hagen and wife Tina of Salisbury, North Carolina; granddaughters, Maggie Hagen Gainey and husband Spence, Rebecca Richmond Morrison and husband Paul, and Chyvonne Greenwood; grandsons, Clay Richmond, Nathan Greenwood, and Bradley Hagen; and eight great grandchildren.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff and administration at Preston Place ll for the loving care given to Ted.

A memorial service will be at Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church, Kingsport on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at 2:00 with the Reverend Shane Smith officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service.
