Rev. Earl Dewey Cookenour, 89, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 8 at Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville, TN. Born in Scott County, VA, he was in the United States Army 577th Ambulance Company as an ambulance orderly during WWII in the European Theatre. Rev. Cookenour pastored and ministered at several churches, was a great young people's leader, and was a member of Pentecostal Powerhouse, Gate City, VA. He worked at Kingsport Press for a number of years. Rev. Cookenour retired from Mason Dixon Trucking Company in 1985 and was the owner of several businesses in the area.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Hazel; parents, Joseph E. and Dona B. Cookenour; son, Rev. Ralph E. Cookenour; three brothers, Echol, Estol and J.C. Cookenour; and sister, Mabel Cookenour Greene.
Rev. Cookenour is survived by his son, Paul Cookenour and wife, Sallie of Knoxville; grandchildren, Rhonda Denise Cookenour Turner, Rebecca Tarver, and Victoria Wright; great-grandchildren, Rachel Turner, Robert Tarver, Jr., and Cody and Marie Tarver; brother, Eugene Cookenour and wife, Jean of Kingsport; daughter-in-law, Sandra Kay Robinson Cookenour Webb and husband, Bishop Hagan Webb of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 11th from 4:30-7:00 pm at the Christian Life Center. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 pm with Rev. Billy Joe Lewis, Rev. Eddie Johnson, Bishop Hagan Webb, Rev. Dwayn Williams, Rev. Adam Williams and Bishop Billy McCool officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted on Wednesday, December 12th at 11:00 am at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be grandchildren and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be the Ministers of Holiness Church of Jesus Christ and The Assemblies of the Lord Jesus Christ organizations.
