Thelma R. Cobb Jones, 87, of Kingsport, passed away Tuesday, February 8, 2011.
Thelma was born March 2, 1923 in Sullivan County. She was the mother of four strong willed children: Ellen Ruth, Clarence Joe, David J. and Sabrina. She was a devoted Christian and a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Kingsport since moving here in 1926. There she was Sunday School Secretary for 50 years. She was instrumental in the organization of Meals on Wheels for the Lutheran church and other church groups in Kingsport. Thelma is remembered for gathering everyone together for the start of Sunday school and ringing the bell when it was over. Today, the bell has been retired and is on display at the church inscribed with her name and celebration of years of service. An avid bowler, Thelma participated in tournaments throughout the US, was a member of the 700 Club, the Women?s Bowling Hall of Fame and won several medals in the Senior Olympics. She also held some state bowling records. She worked at Warpath Bowling Lanes as a cook and enjoyed teaching children from different schools the basics in bowling. Some of Thelma?s closest friends were the owners of Warpath Lanes, Frances, Dennis and Jim Lane. She was a devoted mother who never gave up on her family or God and will be missed greatly by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Dallas Loudy and Louellen Susan Rodefer; brothers, Clancy Homer Loudy, David James Loudy; first husband, Clarence I. Cobb; late husband, Smith E. Jones; grandson, Terry S. Flanigan; daughter, Ellen Ruth Cobb Flanigan Conine and son, David Jay ?D.J.? Cobb.
Survivors include her son, Clarence Joe Cobb and wife, Donna K. Rogers Cobb; granddaughter Thelma Sabrina Flanigan Steel, husband Brett and children, Ashley and Kelli Steel; granddaughter Thelma LeRay Cobb Evans and children, Dominique J. Rose Evans, Isaac Donovan Storm Evans, Kaleb Jaxon Stone Rich; granddaughter Donna Michelle Hammond and children, Kayla Michelle Haddix, Shane Scott Hammond; grandson Clarence Joe Cobb, Jr. and children, Chelsea Nicole Cobb, Joseph Tyler Cobb; grandson Daniel Rogers, grandson Christopher Bo Rogers, wife Tashina and children, Seth Rogers, Emma Rogers, Damien Rogers; grandson Jeremy Shane Rogers, wife Amy and son Landon Kyle Lee Rogers; grandson David J. Cobb, Jr., wife Krissy and children Bethany Cobb and Ethan Cobb.
The family received friends from 5-7 pm on Thursday, February 10, 2011 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. A Celebration of Life was held at 7 pm with Pastor Steve Counts officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 am on Friday at East Lawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers are Clarence Joe Cobb, Brett Steel, Daniel Rogers, Bo Rogers, Shane Rogers and Clarence Joe Cobb, Jr.
