Thelma V. Lavinder, 92, of Kingsport, died on Tuesday, June 30, 2009. She was a life long resident of Kingsport and a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School.
Mrs. Lavinder was a member of Vermont United Methodist Church, where she was active in Willing Workers Class, sang in the choir, played the piano and organ. In addition, she was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a secretary for many years at Ketron and North High Schools until her retirement.
Always the life of the party, Thelma was always ready to go, no matter where! She loved being with people. Her church and her family were her life.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Jesse B. Lavinder, Jr.; son, Larry Lavinder; parents, Horace "Duck" and Emma Cannon; sisters, Beulah Doran and Jean Meade; and brother, W.W. "Bill" Cannon.
Surviving are her two sons, Jerry Lavinder and wife Judy of Kingsport; Danny Lavinder and wife Peg of Fall Branch; a very special daughter-in-law, Peggy Lavinder Wilson of Bristol; a sister, Martha Jo Gott and husband Leland of Kingsport; four grandchildren, Deanna Bishop and husband Todd of Kingsport, Jerry Shane Lavinder and wife Amber of Mt. Carmel, Matt Lavinder and wife Hollie of Bristol, TN, and Annie Elliott and husband Brian, of Bristol, TN; five great-grandchildren, Tyler Bishop, Briana Bishop, Corey Lavinder, Laura Lavinder, and Lana Lavinder; one sister-in-law, Ruth Cannon of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at Vermont United Methodist Church or anytime at the home of Jerry and Judy Lavinder or Danny and Peg Lavinder. Funeral services will be held at the church on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. with The Rev. Dr. Steve Galyon and Rev. Danny Hensley officiating. The eulogy will be given by Matt Lavinder.
Graveside services will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at East Lawn Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Gott, Shane Lavinder, Todd Bishop, Sherrill Doran, Jonnie Darnell, Chris Doran, Brian Elliott, and Donnie Doran.
